travel north america mexico sinaloa mazatlan

Mazatlan is a good sized city along the west coast of Mexico in the state of Sinaloa and it's name is a Nahuatl word meaning "place of the deer."
It is both a busy sea port and a cruise ship and tourist destination.
For several years, Mazatlan was removed from cruise ship ports because of the warring going on between local cartels.
Now, there is little evidence of the fighting except for the very visual presence of armed police and soldiers in pickup trucks.
We travelled both through the city of Mazatlan and into the countryside up into the Sierra Madres without incident... albiet, with an armed guard tagging along behind the bus.
One local implied that the armed guards were cartel members and thats why we could expect no trouble.
We saw and heard evidence that although the cartels were unforgiving in their demand for allegiance, they privided many ammenities for the local people who went along for the ride.
